Hi,
Does anyone run? I decided as i feel well i would have a jog on the treadmill. I managed 15 mins so got over excited and did the same 3 days in arrow along side my exercise classes. I now have shooting pains in both hips and my right knee pops everytime i walk up the stairs. I have decided to rest so hope this helps.
Any advice?
Katie xxx

Hi Katie, Sorry to hear the running had caused you a few problems. I've always been told by my specialists that non or low impact exercise is best for RA, such as swimming/water aerobics or cycling and walking. I think we all tend to overdo things a little when we're feeling good, then pay for it a few days later. Hope you're feeling better soon :) Best wishes Jo. 2012 Fundraising for the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society (NRAS) http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/RoboJo

Hi Katie and welcome to the forum, I don't run and have not been able to exercise due to untreated RA - long story, but I'm now on a new drug and hope to go back to doing low impact exercises, I find water aerobics works best for me and is gentler on the joints. You need to take it easy, and agree whilst we feel well we tend to over extend ourselves and then end up paying for it later Love, Barbara XXXXXX

Hi Katie, Running's not a good idea. However, you can stick your treadmill on incline and walk at a good lick just as though you are walking uphill. It will give you a good cardiovascular workout a and build muscle in your legs. Is your treadmill at home or are you going to the gym? If you're going to the gym do some weight resistant exercises on the machines! Stewart. A friend is someone who knows all about you but loves you anyway!

Hi Katie, I would advise definitely need to talk with your GP or consultant first, we are all so very different & what is right for one will not be for another... but there are also lots of other options to consider like the Wii fit but definitely recommend get some professional advice first and also get GP / consultant to have a look at any painful joints that dont improve with rest... hope u are feeling much better soon, Take care love Liz xxx

Sorry but running and RA do not go together unless one has complete remission from it for a long while.
Swimming, cycling, non-contact sports are far better. I had to give up gymnastics as a child as that's when the RA first came on, plus I wanted to be a ballet dancer, sob.
Walking is pretty good, I would push the pram really fast (when i felt well enough to do this) which is excellent sport! (To the pub.......LOL)

HI No i would not run .Walk on tread mill but thats all . I am into exercise and belong to a health club and though i don,t have much joint promlems . the gym is out most of time as it sucks enjay .Sometime i will go up and do half hour . Swimming and walking is the best for me .The swimming uses less enjay and i feel i can have a good work out .Infact it improves the enjays levals .Where i don,t get that from the gym .I find that tries me then the swim the next day i can,t do as much . So mostley i swim and walk but fittness leavels stay kind the same ( after building up from hardley walking ) Find swimming with a float or todgle improves the way you swim . and clyle in water and push the float up and down with leg .And anything on arms too improve strenth . christine The chocolate eating housewife ...The washer woman .....naughty lady

Hi and welcome to the forum I use to run regularly three time a week, as it kept me fit, and more importantly, meant I could eat like a horse and not put on weight.... However the consultant told me to stop when I was diagnosed. I now swim and do aquafit with occasional visits to the gym. Still haven't managed to reduce the amount I eat though .

Hi welcome t forum it is essential to do some weight bearing exercise for healthy bone density growth such as walking on treadmill and non weight bearing re swimming. running can really jar the joints. now before RA days i was a competive runner cross country running any long distance athletcis running etc. for some time until on treatment i did re try running i found it far to painful was advised rather do walking cycling for me. once into remission i did agan re try but wasnt for me so stuck to swimming walking. it is an individual thing advice is good idea. phsyios who know alot about RA are good palce start. gentle range motion joint exercises for one, also from Occupational therpaist. hope this some benefit for you. i also used to cycling, this im going to re try this summer slowly. from past 1 is now elarning pace oneself. t care hugs melly cuddly cats make my world seem so much more fun

Hi
Welcome
When I was first ill I did aqua fit and loved it. You could try Tai Chi too, as it doesnt have a lot of joint impact I think.
I did use toning tables for a while after swimming but I had to stop when the RA got too severe and I went on steroids and the weight piled on....
I do think that keeping moving in the early yrs helped though.

I was a bit worried but i regularly participate in spinning classes which keep me really fit and dont have any impact on my joints i also burn about 500 calories in a class, i also do 3 body pump classes a week which keeps me strong and have just started a dance class - bit of hip hop, latin and next week line dancing. Im looking forward to it. Find something that suits you theres so much you can still do xxx

Boring cycling oh its such fun especially free wheeling down big hills, bit nerve racking in london. so im sticking to green quieter routes. im gonna try it again this spring if problem hands gears etc again then im selling bike for pair roller boots thats my passion. gonna try 1 thing at time see how i go. aww give it go pace yourself and wear helmet, use a park rather than roads makes it more enjoyable. if not that try something else like aquafit. or ta chi. pilates. and walking. enjoy what u can do dont punish self for what u carnt. blimey listen to me can tell im outdoorsy country girl at heart. melly cuddly cats make my world seem so much more fun

Oh I LOVED roller booting with a passion when I was little! Went in for dance comps with roller boots on! LOL
If I didn't have RA I would have danced all the way through my adult life...but sorry, I went off dancing after I got RA and didn't look good on a Chopper any more! LOL
Mark was given a bike from his last job! He would cycle a bit but looked so funny on it! The children all love their bikes and Ben is always on his.
Love,
Amanda
